In the broader study of human anatomy, the heart and major arteries are often compared to high-volume highways, responsible for transporting massive amounts of oxygenated blood over long distances. However, the true "business end" of the circulatory system exists at the microscopic level within the capillary beds. Capillaries are the smallest and most numerous of the body's blood vessels, with walls so thin—often only a single cell thick—that they allow for the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste products between the blood and the surrounding tissues. For the senior adult, maintaining the health and "openness" of these tiny vessels is a cornerstone of peripheral health and skin integrity.
As the body ages, the microcirculatory system can undergo a process of capillary rarefaction, which is a clinical term for the reduction in the density of functional capillaries. This decline is often exacerbated by a sedentary lifestyle or chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes. When capillary beds become restricted or "closed off," the tissues they serve begin to suffer from chronic under-nourishment.
